Behind the Win: LMAX Group’s Aidan Alberico on Supporting Local Business Through CSR

More than ever, businesses are being recognised not only for market performance but for the impact they create beyond it. LMAX Group, winners of Best Support for Local Businesses in the 2025 CSR Awards, offer a strong example of how local partnerships and community investment can shape a sustainable and inclusive type of success.

Their ongoing partnership work in Kensington and Chelsea has supported a range of community-led projects focused on access, skills, and local employment. We spoke to Aidan Alberico, Senior Corporate Sustainability Partner at LMAX Group, to learn more about the vision behind the work and what’s next for the fintech firm’s sustainability journey.

About LMAX Group

LMAX Group is a global fintech company that operates institutional trading venues for FX and digital assets. Headquartered in London with offices across nine countries, the company builds and maintains its own trading infrastructure to ensure transparency and efficiency in the world’s most liquid markets.

Alongside its financial services, LMAX Group has taken an active role in supporting its local community. Their CSR strategy focuses on three core areas: Positive Community Impact, Leveraging Innovation, and Sustainability in Action. These priorities shape projects across education, social mobility, environmental resilience, and inclusive employment.

A long-standing partnership with the Kensington & Chelsea Foundation has supported 43 community-led initiatives to date, reaching over 50,000 residents. These programmes include coding camps, employment pathways, and tailored skills development, aiming to address structural inequality in one of the UK’s most economically divided boroughs.

In Conversation with Aidan Alberico

We invited Aidan to share more about the team’s work, the challenges and achievements along the way, and the importance of industry recognition.

Please provide a brief overview of your business or what do you do within the company.

LMAX Group is a global financial technology company and the leading independent operator of multiple institutional execution venues for FX and digital assets trading. With offices in 9 countries and a global client base, the Group builds and runs its own high performance, ultra-low latency exchange infrastructure, which includes matching engines in London, New York, Tokyo and Singapore.

The Group’s portfolio includes LMAX Exchange (institutional FX exchange, FCA regulated MTF and MAS regulated RMO), LMAX Global (FCA and CySec regulated brokers) and LMAX Digital (GFSC regulated institutional spot crypto currency exchange).

Our mission is to create a level playing field for all participants in the world’s biggest financial markets, through transparent, precise and consistent execution, based on robust trading technology.

My role within the organisation is to lead, design, and deliver our Corporate Sustainability strategy. The intended outcome of this role is not only to deliver positive impact for both people and planet but also to strengthen LMAX Group’s business vision, employee value proposition, and long-term success through enhanced non-financial performance across the Group.

What would you attribute as the main reason for your success?

I attribute my success to consistently applying an entrepreneurial mindset to the evolving fields of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility. While these areas are not new, their growing recognition as strategic drivers of non-financial performance has created opportunities to embed them deeply into the core of business operations. By aligning environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities with overarching business objectives, I’ve been able to build interconnected systems of impact, from supply chain practices to employee engagement initiatives. This holistic approach ensures that sustainability is not just a philanthropic add-on, but a shared roadmap for long-term societal change and integrated community impact. It’s this ability to see the bigger picture and connect the dots across functions that has been central to my success.

What has been the biggest challenge you have overcome?

I’ve been fortunate to work in an environment where establishing a formalised Corporate Sustainability function was met with enthusiasm and alignment, thanks to our strong culture of responsibility. The challenge has been in setting up the right avenues through which to expand our impact beyond financials. There are countless organisations doing meaningful work but finding partners that align with our values and allow us to contribute more than just financial support, such as sharing expertise and co-creating long-term impact, has required persistence, discernment, and a mindset focused on mutual growth. Overcoming this challenge has enabled LMAX Group to elevate its impact and build truly integrated, purpose-driven collaborations.

What do you think made you stand out as a winner in the awards? Tell us about the specific project or facet of your business you believe earned you this award win.

One project that I believe was instrumental in earning this award is our ongoing partnership with the Kensington & Chelsea Foundation, which began in 2020. This initiative was born out of a recognition of the stark disparities within our “home” borough where many residents, particularly from marginalised communities, face systemic barriers to essential resources like education, employment, and healthcare.

Through this partnership, we’ve been able to support 43 targeted, community-led projects that address these root causes of inequality. From funding educational and skills development programmes, such as our own Coding Camp, to supporting initiatives that enhance social mobility and wellbeing, our involvement has gone beyond financial contributions. We’ve worked to build integrated partnerships that leverage our expertise and resources to create sustainable, long-term impact.

The tangible outcomes we’ve helped to deliver, such as improved access to education, increased employment opportunities, and enhanced community resilience, are a testament to the power of focused, collaborative action. This project exemplifies our commitment to responsible business and our belief in creating inclusive, equitable communities. It’s this kind of deep, values-driven engagement that I believe truly sets our work apart.

What is the next big step for you?

The next big step for me is to lead the development and implementation of a long-term sustainability vision that positions LMAX Group as a global leader in sustainable fintech. This means institutionalising sustainability across all levels of the Group, embedding it into our culture, operations, and product offerings.

We have ambitious goals that we’re focused on, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions in alignment with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), advancing circular economy practices, and expanding our suite of sustainable products to benefit our partnerships. A key part of this journey will be increasing customer engagement with our sustainability initiatives and continuing to grow our thought leadership and influence in this space.

Ultimately, I want our work to have a measurable global impact, contributing meaningfully to international sustainability goals while remaining agile and responsive to evolving trends. Ongoing recognition as a sustainability leader isn’t just a milestone, it’s a responsibility we’re committed to upholding as we shape a more equitable and resilient future.

Would you recommend Business Awards UK to other businesses? If so, why?

Absolutely, I would highly recommend Business Awards UK to other organisations. These programmes are not only a celebration of excellence but also a powerful platform for recognising the diversity and innovation across UK businesses. What makes them unique is their accessibility. Designed to level the playing field so that even the smallest enterprises can compete alongside multinational corporations.

Participating in awards such as these provides a chance to reflect on your achievements, share your story, and be inspired by the work of others. Whether you’re a start-up or a mid-sized business such as LMAX Group, the experience is both rewarding and empowering.

Looking Forward

As LMAX Group builds on its sustainability commitments, its work offers a practical example of how businesses can form local partnerships that address real community needs.
