Behind the Win with VITA

Behind the Win: Meet VITA, Best Tax Advisory Firm at the 2025 Accountancy Awards

In a sector where precision, clarity, and foresight are everything, VITA (VAT & Indirect Tax Advisors) has quickly earned a reputation as one of the UK’s standout advisory firms. Their recent win in the Best Tax Advisory Firm category at the 2025 Accountancy Awards reflects a deliberate and focused approach to VAT and indirect tax challenges – one grounded in technical excellence and client-first thinking.

Founded in 2019, VITA is led by a team of experts with over 125 years of combined experience. At the helm is Greg McNally, Managing Partner, who recently spoke with us to share his thoughts on the company’s journey, the philosophy behind its success, and what’s next for the firm.

A Trusted Partner in Complex Territory

VITA was formed to meet a clear need in the market: accessible, high-quality VAT advice that balances technical rigour with real-world application. Their work goes far beyond compliance. From large corporates and government bodies to SMEs and charities, the firm provides tailored support that cuts through the complexity of tax regulations.

Their unique approach has seen them advising on everything from zero-rated construction projects to the cutting-edge Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), a rapidly emerging area of indirect tax.

While VITA’s sector specialisms include energy, public sector, property and finance, what truly sets them apart is their consistent focus on value-added outcomes. Whether negotiating with HMRC, training internal teams, or solving tangled VAT recovery puzzles, the firm works in close partnership with its clients to provide clear, commercially grounded solutions.

In Conversation with Greg McNally

Following their award win, we spoke with Greg McNally to hear more about VITA’s path to success and what lies ahead.

Please provide a brief overview of your business or what do you do within the company.

We are a firm specialising in VAT and Indirect Tax advisory, notably including CBAM, a tax that is coming soon and has had very little attention and coverage.

We’re problem solvers by nature and seek complex advisory work rather than core compliance.

Ideally businesses will speak to us in advance of projects, and we can advise on options and the best approach.

In many cases we are reviewing cases after the event and work to retrofit advice or make the best of bad situations – often mitigating HMRC assessments and penalties.

What would you attribute as the main reason for your success?

The people that have gathered to work in VITA. Tax is a complicated and nuanced area, and advisory services can be critical to businesses.

We have gathered a very senior team with around 125 years of relevant experience in this area – this puts us in a unique position to provide high quality solution-based advice and assistance.

What has been the biggest challenge you have overcome?

When setting up it was difficult to decide where our value was. The easy route would be to latch on to some compliance or more common issues but realised that this would be too close to the accountancy sector and most generalists had a good understanding of this.

So, we chose to be different and leaned into the more complex areas – the marketplace and demand is much smaller, but likewise so is the competition making us one of the best advisory practices in our field.

VAT is a nuanced tax and as we have grown, we have identified a diverse range of experience and knowledge in the team – such as VAT and insolvency, oil gas and energy, charities and public sector, construction land and property.

What do you think made you stand out as a winner in the awards?

The accountancy market is moving fast, with consolidation and use of technology. VITA’s aims are to go back to the future and believe the way forward it to take a leaf out of history and return to the trusted advisor model.

We understand our services are not cheap and therefore strive to ensure we add value at every stage possible.

Tell us about the specific project or facet of your business you believe earned you this award win.

We believe what made us stand out was our range of clients, represented by the SME and Charity sectors, but we also represent government bodies and have several clients with group turnover ranging from £100m to £4bn.

What is the next big step for you?

We have recruited key people at a time that they were available, rather than the traditional approach of waiting till we desperately needed them.

We are therefore looking forward to implementing our strategy to roll out our services across the market and achieving our turnover goal of £1m.

Would you recommend Business Awards UK to other businesses? If so, why?

Yes, we would recommend Business Awards UK. The application process was smooth allowing us to demonstrate in our own words and style why we believe we were worthy of this award.

These awards don’t focus on the size of the business making it accessible to the smaller or up and coming organisations and will provide some we’ll deserved exposure.

Looking Ahead

VITA’s story is one of strategic differentiation and genuine client advocacy in a sector often driven by scale rather than nuance. Their win at the 2025 Accountancy Awards not only affirms their status as a leading tax advisory firm but underscores the value of expert, personalised service in an increasingly automated financial world.

With a £1 million turnover target in sight and a deep commitment to emerging issues like environmental taxation, VITA is making strides in indirect tax advice in the UK. Their continued investment in people, training, and forward-thinking strategy suggests their best is still to come.
