Behind the Win with Danny Thompson, Grand Station

Behind the Win: Meet Grand Station, Industry Leader Award Winner at the 2025 Hospitality Awards

When it comes to delivering large-scale, high-impact events, Grand Station has become a standout in the UK’s hospitality landscape. Based in the heart of Wolverhampton and housed within a beautifully restored 19th-century railway station, the venue hosts over 300 events annually, ranging from global product launches and multicultural weddings to televised pageants and corporate conferences.

Their recent recognition in our 2025 Hospitality Awards, taking home the Industry Leader Award, highlights both the scale of their impact and the strength of their leadership model. The award celebrates a balance of growth, diverse programming, and dedication to client experience.

Leading from the Heart of Wolverhampton

Since opening in 2013, Grand Station has grown into one of the region’s busiest venues, known for its adaptable event spaces and ability to host everything from high-profile weddings to major brand activations. With more than 70,000 visitors per year and clients including Porsche, Amazon, and Google, their reach has expanded well beyond the West Midlands.

What truly distinguishes Grand Station is its operational model. The venue’s sales, planning, and operations teams work in close alignment, forming a single coordinated engine that delivers exceptional results at scale. This structure allows the business to evolve quickly while upholding high standards, especially under the spotlight that came with a BBC documentary filmed onsite in 2023.

A strategic pivot toward national clients, supported by flexible packages tailored to cultural and corporate needs alike, has allowed the venue to remain both inclusive and resilient. It is this adaptability, paired with a clear sense of purpose, that underpins their leadership status in the sector.

In Conversation with Danny Thompson, Director of Sales and Development at Grand Station

Following their award win, we caught up with Danny to reflect on Grand Station’s journey, the moments that defined them, and the philosophy driving their continued success.

Please provide a brief overview of your business or what do you do within the company.

The Grand Station is a large events venue located in Wolverhampton, hosting over 300 events a year. Built in 1854, it used to be Wolverhampton Low Level Railway Station. The venue holds everything from different types of weddings, to conferences, exhibitions, corporate dinners, parties and Christmas dinners. The venue is a fully flexible space, with every event having an Event Coordinator assigned to it, to ensure every event is the best it can be. My role as the Director of Sales and Development is to grow, develop and manage the business, leading the three departments, sales, planning and operations. The events industry is a fantastic place to work, especially working at a venue, as every event and day is always different.

What would you attribute as the main reason for your success?

We have a fantastic team at the Grand Station, who work long hours and always go above and beyond to deliver the best event that we can. Organising weddings for example, can be very stressful. But getting married, along with having children are probably the greatest day of someone’s life, we have to ensure the event goes perfect. We also have to continue to evolve, to ensure the packages continue to suit the public, especially in these financially challenging times.

What has been the biggest challenge you have overcome?

To suddenly stop working and having to postpone all events during the COVID outbreak was a particularly hard time. Seeing so many of our competitors close down and having to shut the venue for almost 18 months was heartbreaking. We are so grateful to all the customers that stuck with us and continued with their booking, this allowed us to bounce back straight away as soon as the restrictions were lifted. We then had a backlog of events, hosting a staggering 88 events in the first 11 weeks back open. The business has continued to thrive since.

What do you think made you stand out as a winner in the awards? Tell us about the specific project or facet of your business you believe earned you this award win.

The award is a fantastic way to sum up an amazing year. We started on with the BBC documentary on the Grand Station, which for the first time allowing the cameras behind the scenes to really show what goes on at a busy events venue. We’ve had many tremendous events, having the privilege to hold the Miss England finals, which were broadcast all around the world. We’ve held many amazing weddings, held events for some of the biggest companies in the world, but one of my personal highlights was to hold the launch of the new Porsche cars. It was fantastic to see the cars in the venues and to see the anticipation on everyone’s faces.

What is the next big step for you?

To continue, to offer the best experience we can, to give that special moment that they will never forget. We appreciate that peoples budgets may be tighter at the moment, but we should never compromise on service. If our clients are now looking to hold less events per year, we have to ensure that the event is unforgettable. If anything, it means the expectations are higher, that we have to deliver and that makes it so much more exciting.

Would you recommend Business Awards UK to other businesses? If so, why?

These awards are fantastic ways to pat the team on the back for all the hard work and sacrifices that they have put in over the past 12 months. We were lucky enough to have been a finalist before, but to win this award has really boosted team morale and also reminds us all how lucky we are to be doing something that we really love.
