Behind the Win with Tobruk Protective Security Solutions

Behind the Win: Meet Tobruk Protective Security Solutions, Essex Security Company of the Year

Tobruk Protective Security Solutions has been named Security Company of the Year in the Security sector of the Essex Business Awards, part of our Regional Business Awards.

Based in North Weald, the consultancy provides independent assessments across physical, technical and personnel security. Their services include security surveys, risk assessments and audits, giving clients a structured view of vulnerabilities across their sites and operations.

A defining feature of their model is their independence from security manufacturers, integrators and guarding providers. This allows the consultancy to assess available options without commercial affiliations influencing the advice given.

In Conversation with Danny Moody, Founder and Senior Consultant at Tobruk Protective Security Solutions

Following the company’s regional award win, we spoke with Founder and Senior Consultant Danny Moody about the experience behind the business, the challenges involved in developing it and what comes next.

Please provide a brief overview of your business or what do you do within the company.

“I’m the Founder and Senior Consultant at Tobruk Protective Security Solutions, and we provide protective security consultancy and related specialist security services to businesses across multiple industries, including facilities, healthcare, local government, education and entertainment.”

What would you attribute as the main reason for your success?

“I had a strong protective security background from working in specialist senior security management roles across multiple iconic and blue-chip sites within London prior to starting the business in 2019. Also, I have been willing to learn and improve my skills through professional development and vocational qualifications both prior to and since starting Tobruk PSS. I have exceptionally high standards, which means clients don’t just get what they asked for, they get a level of care, detail and commitment that builds trust, creates repeat business and leads to strong recommendations.”

What has been the biggest challenge you have overcome?

“Although my professional background gave me strong expertise in the security sector, I recognised that building my business knowledge was key to taking the company forward. Over the past two years, I have invested heavily in business coaching and self-development, giving me the tools, confidence and strategic thinking needed to support the next stage of our growth.”

What do you think made you stand out as a winner in the awards? Tell us about the specific project or facet of your business you believe earned you this award win.

“I think we are quite a unique security company as we predominantly provide advisory services to clients or project-based work. It is all about applying our expertise to ensure that our clients’ businesses are properly protected from the range of security threats that they face.

“We can also provide other specialist security services such as cyber security consultancy, intelligence reports and security and first aid training through strategic partnerships. We have also recently been shortlisted as finalists for several national security industry awards, which demonstrates that we are receiving recognition for our work.”

What is the next big step for you?

“We are aiming to grow the business over the next two years, expand our team and become the protective security consultancy of choice within the facilities and building management industry, where we have already forged some strong partnerships.”

Would you recommend Business Awards UK to other businesses? If so, why?

“Yes, I would. I found the application process was well thought out and required you to think carefully about your application. For the winners, the opportunity to feature in articles and gain exposure and recognition for your business achievements is invaluable.”

Independent Advice in a Complex Security Market

The distinction recognised by this award lies partly in the breadth of the consultancy’s work. Tobruk Protective Security Solutions assesses security across several connected areas rather than viewing physical measures, technology and personnel arrangements in isolation.

Their role can also extend beyond identifying risks. On complex projects, they help clients consider different options and navigate competitive tender processes, supporting informed decisions when appointing security partners and procuring services.

The company is also investing in the future of the profession through the addition of a trainee consultant studying Security and Crime Science. Together, these elements reflect a business combining independent judgement, technical capability and a considered approach to long-term development.
